Description

Uncanny X-Men # 221 1st app. Mr. Sinister, Sabretooth app.

Date: September, 1987

Creative Team: Marc Silvestri (Artist), Chris Claremont (Writer)

Condition Notes: Very Fine

Story Notes: This issue features the first appearance of Mr. Sinister, leader of the Marauders. Following the Mutant Massacre storyline, Mr. Sinister sends the Marauders to kill Cyclops’s estranged wife, Madelyne Prior. This issue also features an appearance by Sabretooth that leads into the next isssue’s second Wolverine vs. Sabretooth fight in Uncanny X-Men # 222.

The Mutant Massacre storyline focused on the evil Marauders attempting to wipe out the Morlock mutants that live underneath New York City. The storyline is famous for introducing the first Wolverine and Sabertooth fight in comics. Although the characters had existed for over a decade in the Marvel Universe, this storyline featured their first encounter in the 2 parts Uncanny X-Men #212-213. The storyline also introduced a new enemy group called the Marauders, their motive marks a more violent trend in comics that was emerging towards the end of the Copper Age (1982-1991). Although Mr. Sinister is mentioned as the architect of the plot, he does not actually appear until Uncanny X-Men # 221.

Batman # 428 Death of Jason Todd Robin II
Condition Notes: Mid-Grade Condition with minimal cover wear. Item Notes: Batman # 428 features the Death of Jason Todd (Robin II). Jason Todd, the second Robin, was controversial from his inception as a replacement for Dick Grayson (the first Robin). Created by Gerry Conway for Batman #357, Todd was a mirror image of Dick Grayson with the exception that he had blonde hair that he dyed when appearing as Robin. After Crisis on Infinite Earths, Jason Todd's origin was dramatically altered to re-envision him as street kid. Jason Todd hereafter was depicted as questioning, petulant and had a tendency to be more extreme than Batman, even killing in one instance. In the Death In The Family storyline Jason Todd as Robin had been beaten by the Joker. The end of the comic featured a 1-900 telephone number to allow fans to determine his fate. While an alternate ending was created to show Robin had lived, the fan vote determined the fate of Jason Todd to die. Batman #428 revealed the outcome of the fan vote.
