Amazing Spider-Man # 238 features the first appearance of the Hobgoblin. Created by Roger Stern, John Romita, Sr. and John Romita, Jr., the Hobgoblin was introduced as a new character that was heir to the Green Goblin legacy. After Harry Osborn’s failed attempts and mental illness to assume his father’s disguise, the creative team decided to start fresh with a total different character. Hobgoblin’s identity was kept a mystery for nearly five years, through the course of several writers and artist teams. Hobgoblin’s identity was pinned on several suspects including Flash Thompson, and finally reporter Ned Leeds. In 1996, Roger Stern returned to complete his Hobgoblin story revealing the true identity of the villain.
This is a KEY comic from the 1980’s that contains the first appearance of a major Spider-Man villain.
