Adventures of Superman # 500 Collector’s Edition

Date: June, 1993

Creative Team: Jerry Ordway (Writer), Tom Grummet (Artist), Doug Hazlewood (Inker), Mike Carlin (Editor)

Condition Notes: Mint condition, Sealed in White Bag.

After the Death of Superman storyline, followed a 10 part story, Funeral for a Friend, which showed the vacuum left by the death of Superman. Fans were teased with the return of Superman, but instead the final part, Adventures of Superman # 500, saw the emergence of four distinct Supermen: The Eradicator, Cyborg-Superman, Steel, and Superboy (Conner Kent). This issue marks the 1st appearance of both Steel and Superboy (Conner Kent).

This comic was released in two major editions, the Collector’s edition and Newsstand edition. While both editions featured the same interior artwork, they had two very different covers. The Collector’s edition features a white bag with a Superman emblem. If one were to remove the comic from the bag, the cover of the Collector’s edition features a painted image of Superman reaching out from beyond. The Collector’s edition also included a trading card as well as an extra 8 pages of story to the comic.

This comic was released as part of a major revitalization campaign by DC comics in the 90’s which saw all of their major superheroes replaced over the course of two years. Among these storylines included the Death of Superman, Emerald Twilight (Hal Jordan becomes a Parrallax), Wonder Woman replaced by Artemis, the Death of Green Arrow, and Aquaman loosing his hand.
