New York Comic Con NYCC 2019 Round Up

by Joshua H. Stulman

This past October New York Comic Con stormed Manhattan with 4 days of Comics, Pop Culture, Movie and Video awesomeness!! New York Comic Con 2019 took place on October 3-6 at the Jacob Javits Center. The annual convention is the largest on the east coast and attracts thousands of visitors. NYCC debuts the latest in geek life from the entertainment industry. Everything from Funko Pop, Japanese imports, TV shows & movies and of course, COMICS!!!

Here’s 5 fun things from this year’s NYCC2019

5) Costumes

Have a flair for the theatric? Cosplay (Playing around in Costumes) is always huge at New York Comic Con. Some of the best included a dead on accurate Adam West Batman complete with Bomb, Beetleguice, Mysterio with illusion effects and more! Many of these costumes are home-made, making for some fun and creative designs.

4) Original Art

Some of the often understated gems at New York Comic Con can be found in the dealer area of the show floor. Here you can discover Rare Golden Age Comics as well as Original Artwork. Heritage Auctions is always a great booth to explore. This year they had the iconic original artwork to Neal Adams’s famouns Joker cover for Batman # 251. Heritage also was promoting auctions for the original unpublished pitch for Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns as well as a page of Alan Moore’s Batman: The Killing Joke. On the Marvel side of things, Heritage had an unprecedented copy of Marvel Comics # 1 (1939). Elsewhere on the floor was an amazing amassment of Jack Kirby original artwork including a page from Avengers # 11 featuring an early Spider-Man appearance.

3) Action Figure Debuts

Tons and Tons of Action Figures and toys! Hasbro had a huge reveal with the finished sculpt for their mega Transformer, Unicron. It is the largest Transformer action figure ever made at over 30″. The figure is only available as a pre-order through their collector initiative called, Haslab. Diamond Distributer had life size mock ups of Kenner’s original Star Wars including Darth Vader and R2D2. Mezco had a ton of new 6″ Marvel and DC figures complete with real fabric costumes as well as new 4″ figure line for both Batman ’66 and Max Fleischer’s Superman!

DC hosted signings for Frank Miller, Jim Lee, Greg Capullo while Image had a major celebration for Todd McFarlane’s Spawn # 300. McFarlane signed for fans all four days of the convention. McFarlane even brought along his wife Wanda Kolomyjec (the original editor on Spawn) as well as legendary letter Tom Orzechowski. Artist Alley featured artists like Rob Liefeld, Marc Silvestri, Chris Claremont, Scott Snyder, Adam & Andy Kubert and many more.
