10 Gift Ideas for Comic Fans

by Joshua Stulman

With Thanksgiving upon us, the holiday season has finally arrived! We hear from parents and friends of comic fans alike who aren’t sure about what kinds of presents are out there. It may be difficult to decide on a gift for that special someone especially if comic book culture is their hobby and not yours.  Some common concerns are: What if the person already has this issue? or That the person likes a certain character, but you’re not sure a comic is what you want?

We at Brooklyn Comic Shop have helped compile a Top 10 List of Great Gifts for Comic Fans that are sure to guide you to the perfect Christmas or Chanukah present this season:

10) Vintage Comics

Genius!! Comics are great gifts for comic fans! Whether is getting a bunch of comics for reading or a classic comic, Comic Fans are never disappointed by getting more comics! Sometimes a vintage book is just the right thing. Vintage Comics appeal to Comic Fan’s sense of history, and showcases important events in comic history. If they are interested in Comic Artists, Vintage Comics by some of the greats include Jack Kirby, Neal Adams, George Perez, John Byrne and comic super-stars like Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld, and Jim Lee.

We have a wide selection of Vintage comics from the Golden Age (1933-1955) Silver Age (1956-1969) Bronze Age (1970-1980) Copper Age (1980-1991) and present time.

9) #1 Comics

Something a little more special than your regular vintage comic are #1 issues! Sometimes #1 issues feature the first appearance of the comic book character. They always feature the beginning of a new storyline and are always a great place to start. #1 issues are usually missed by casual readers because they are coming in to the series after hearing from others, then its a mad dash to collect the back issues.

We have a great selection of classic and modern #1 issues.

8) Comic Art Decor

If you are thinking about decorating, Comic Art Prints and Posters are great for presents. They are perfect for Man-Caves or even the office. We have a great selection 0r Comic Prints/Posters that range from Comic Con Exclusives, Movie Posters, and Comic Art Prints. All can be found in our Poster/Prints section.

7) Original Comic Art

Original Comic Art is a unique and one-of-a-kind gift that are sure to hold a special place in any Comic Fan’s collection. Whether its a sketch by Green Lantern Creator Mart Nodell, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles creator Kevin Eastman, or an Original Archie Comic Page, a piece of Original Art is sure to be treasured.

6) Vintage Action Figures

Action figures go hand in hand with Comic Collecting, and we have a great selection of Vintage Action Figures. These include Original Star Wars still in the packaging or Retro He-Man and She Ra figures made to look like they are straight from the hit 80’s cartoon show! Check Out our G.I. Joe classics too!

5) First Appearance Comics

First Appearances are just that, the very first time a character debuts. These tend to be harder to find comics that have the greatest capacity to increase in value over time. Whether its Harley Quinn , Spider-Man’s Venom Costume, or Cable and Deadpool, we have a great selection of these premium comics! You will definitely score some major points with these gems.

4) Sketch Comic Art Commissions

The perfect combination of comics and original artwork! Sketch Covers are variant comic books produced with a blank outer wrap designed for artists to create custom covers for comic fans. What makes Brooklyn Comic Shop so special is our focus on obtaining some of the rarest comic book creators to sign significant works from their career. Our collection represents items signed by Joe Shuster/Jerry Siegel (Superman Creators), Bob Kane (Batman, Joker Creator), Jack Kirby (Captain America and Marvel), Stan Lee (Spider-Man), Todd McFarlane (Spawn) and many, many more. Many of these books have been eye witnessed directly by the Brooklyn Comic Shop or have been verified through provenance. All items come with a Certificate of Authenticity that states when, where, and by whom the comic was signed. All comics are guaranteed to pass any third party certification.

2) Gift Certificates

Well you’ve made it down to the bottom of the list and still aren’t sure what to get? Let them decide! Brooklyn Comic Shop offers gift certificates in any amount! Contact us to make arrangements:  info@BrooklynComicshop.com

1) Action Comics #1

Sure to be a hit with any comic fan both young and old! Action Comics #1 is the first appearance of Superman (and also the very first Super-Hero comic book!) It dates back to 1938 created by Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel after years of pitching their new hero to publishers. Finally Superman saw print with over a million copies run off the presses. But since these weren’t seen as collectibles back then few were saved. Between the paper drives and parents’ cleaning house, only about 20 survive in excellent shape and maybe 500 copies exist in total. At a value of upwards $2.5 million, Sorry but you’ll have to hit the auction block for this one!

Happy Holidays to All!
